The roots of the Peabody Essex Museum date to the 1799 founding of the East India Marine Society, an organization of Salem captains and supercargoes who sailed beyond the Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn. Members collected “facts and observations” to improve navigation and brought back “natural and artificial curiosities” to create a museum, in addition to depositing copies of their navigational logs with the Society. Over the centuries, the mergers of the EIMS with the Peabody Academy of...

Phillips Library’s logbooks are a foundational collection of the Peabody Essex Museum. The mariner members of the East India Marine Society were required to keep journals of their voyages, intended to assist with “the improvement and security of navigation,” and deposit them with the society. The library now holds over 3000 logbooks dated 1729–1961, documenting voyages to all parts of the world. They largely record latitude, longitude, weather, and sailing conditions, but reference...

The American Neptune was America's premier quarterly journal of maritime history and arts, founded by a group that included Samuel Eliot Morison and Walter Muir Whitehill. Its articles are of interest to all who enjoy accounts of ships, the seas, and those who have sailed them for mercantile gain, their nation's interest, or the love of exploration. They cover a wide range of subjects, geographical areas, and time periods for an audience of scholars, professionals and enthusiasts. 1994–2002...

Contains the log of the British brig Ann (1776) and the later logs of the American vessels Three Sisters and Astrea (1788-1790), whose logbook keeper was Nathaniel Silsbee, Jr. Silsbee seems to have written over some pages of correspondence previously recorded by Diederich Wise, master of the Ann, so that the page order isn't strictly chronological. It is unclear which logbook keeper recorded the sea songs and poetry included at the back of the book.  The logbook of the British brig Ann...
